Bone Nut and Saddle Fabrication

Custom Bone Nut & Saddle Fabrication in Austin, TX

The nut and saddle are the only two points where your strings actually touch the guitar. Plastic ones — even on expensive instruments — mute tone and cause tuning problems. Mythic Guitar Company hand-fabricates bone nuts and saddles, cut specifically for your guitar and your playing.

Why bone

  • Harder and denser than plastic or synthetic materials, transferring more string energy into the top — more volume, sustain and clarity
  • Naturally self-lubricating slots for stable tuning, especially with heavy bending or a tremolo
  • The traditional choice on high-end acoustics and vintage instruments

What fabrication involves

This is not a drop-in part. Each blank is cut, shaped and slotted for your specific instrument: string spacing matched to your fretboard and playing style, slot depth set for correct first-fret action, saddle height and compensation set for accurate intonation up the neck. The difference is audible unplugged from the first chord.

A new nut or saddle pairs naturally with a full setup or fretwork, and it's a standard part of our Martin repair work.

Frequently asked questions

Will a bone nut really change my tone?

On acoustic guitars, clearly — open strings ring louder and cleaner. On electrics the biggest gains are tuning stability and open-string sustain.

My guitar goes out of tune when I bend. Can this fix it?

Very often yes. Strings binding in poorly cut nut slots are the most common cause of tuning instability. A properly slotted bone nut eliminates the pinging and drift.

Do you do compensated saddles?

Yes — fully compensated acoustic saddles matched to your string gauge, so intonation is accurate past the 12th fret.
